The optical business has been blessed with a number of good people, but one of our great individuals was Mark R. Kline. Mark was well liked and respected by customers and competitors alike, as he was a man of great integrity and fierce loyalty. He was also a true champion for United States’ service veterans and our Armed Forces. It was a sad day in the winter of 2017 when Mark went home to be with his Lord.

proceeds go to the bva!
Mark was too valued a friend to allow his passing to occur without notice or special recognition, so his good friend Kim Snodgrass committed in the summer of 2018 to organize The Mark R. Kline Memorial Golf Outing. In Mark’s honor, we knew any funds that were raised needed to go to a veterans’ group, and Mark’s widow shared that Mark’s new passion was Blinded Veterans Association. (This group has been in existence since WW II, and exists solely to assist any visually impaired veteran in the United States).
In July 2018, with limited funds, a few sponsors, and no real idea what we were doing, the first annual Mark R. Kline Outing occurred and thanks to our incredible attendees, we were able to cut a check to BVA for $ 6000.00. (An added bonus was that BVA was so impressed with our intentions that the BVA President and Executive Director both flew in at personal expense and attended that inaugural outing). In July 2019, we held our second event. Costs had gone up, but sponsorship and participants also increased, and the check to BVA that year was $7000.00. Our third event in July, 2020 featured fifty-two of the world’s best golfers and again raised $ 7000.00 for BVA; in 2021, our fourth event saw a new high of fifty-six golfers and tremendous support from sponsors and supporters raising $8,000.00.
In 2022 (5th year). we had 64 golfers play and sent a check to BVA for $10,000.00, making a five year total of $ 38,000.00!
2023 was our first year contending with anything less than perfect weather as we were rained on several times. The storm did pass, we finished in bright sunshine, and our incredible supporters raised another $ 8,000.00 for BVA. Thank you so much!
Once again thank you all for your support this past year. The Mark Kline Memorial means so much to all of us and would not be possible if not for all of you. In 2024, we raised $8000.00 to send to the Blinded Veterans. They thank you and we thank you. Let’s make 2025 the best one yet.
This event is ongoing. Many first year attendees are still coming back, and many bring in friends, neighbors, and relatives as new foursomes. It is always held the last Saturday in July, and is played at a course Mark loved, Loyal Oak Golf Course in Norton, Ohio. We actively solicit donations and players. We are still providing breakfast snacks and coffee, lunch, and dinner as part of the festivities.
